Audience Feedback

Animatic Storyboard

This is my first plan of a Animatic Storyboard, I may change due to me finding a better location.
To cut the long story short here is my storyboard in steps.
1. Close up of phone (naturalistic) saying "Getting off bus now"
2. Gets text saying "Its really not working"
3. Stresses out on bus, lots of cuts of head against window ect.
4. Changes position while camera angle is still.
5.Close up of rain on window.
6. Exiting the Bus coming down stairs
7. POV shot of face sad
8. Grabs phone tries to ring girlfriend
9. Dual split screen shot of girlfriend and character (going to shoot a shot where I turn off my phone to see what looks better.)
10. Goes angry starts walking about (also record getting happier to see whats better.)
11. Calls friend and starts getting happier.
12. Turns off Phone
13. Drinks and smokes to create party vibe.
14. Close ups of drink
15. Shots of friends smiling and drinking and dancing Maybe shoot someone sleeping at end to show end of night.

My idea has changed!

My idea for my music video has changed along with the storyboard. I wanted the video to be emotional and to show a drunken state as the original song and video shows this. The storyboard that I have now chosen is a lot easier to shoot as it is on a bus, in an alleyway at my house and at a garage. Also the props and the new cast is a lot more reliable.

First scene Shot

I have already shot my final scene as it was hard to get a place where we were alowed to smoke at the location. I knew someone who knew a garage and they let us film there. Most of the shots were Mid shots or close ups showing people drinking/smoking or laughing. This brings a happy freindly mood and shows the contrast between my main characters relationship with his girlfreind breaking down.
Luckily I have found a better location for all of my scenes so I will keep the story line and the main plot but instead use a lot more interesting location for all of them

Diary Entry

This week I have been practicing using the camera and looking into the places that I can shoot my scene. We got in groups and shot a wide variety shots, these were then edited to create certain styles of shots.
Split screens were basically two shots that were split in half and made into the whole screen, this can be used to show two different pieces of performance at the same time or show maybe the same person but in a different place.
Another camera technique we used was slow motion, slow motion was visually exciting as the slow motion helps emphasise on the small things and make them attractive. In our piece we threw water at someone which looked entertaining in slow mo.
We reversed the clip and it also looked good as its not every day you see water coming from the floor to someones face and back into the cup.
The next clip took a while to film as we did a split screen but kept the camera in the same position. I had to make sure that I didnt enter the other region or it would not work as in editing I had to crop out the other half, this gave the illusion that there was 2 of me in the same area.

Digipack photoshoot

My original plan was to do a nightshoot and to take a photo of my character at a bus stop when the bus is pulled up. As the time got closer I realised a few of the problems that I might come across when filming at night and problems with the type of shot I want.
Firstly the lighting was practically pitch black so we had to use flash, the only problem with flash is that it made it look like the picture was taken in the daytime and not at night due to the light.
Also because I wanted a bus to be infront of my character I could really only take 1 photo every 20 minutes as I had to wait for the bus to come and also there would be people coming off it that might be in the way.

Because of these problems I decided to go to my back up photoshoot which would be to represent the last scene and to have the text in the right hand side. When filming my last scene there was cardboard in the background which I realised could be used as a canvas to write my title on either on photoshop or in real life.
I am doing the final photo's for my digipack tonight and will upload a picture of my sketch on my next post.

Inspirations

Brief

1. A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with two of the following three options:·

a website homepage for the band;·

a cover for its release as part of a digipak (CD/DVD package);·

a magazine advertisement for the digipak (CD/DVD package).

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have chosen to create a music video as I feel that I can experiment with the effects and I beleive that I have the appropriate recources to do so. I have never done a music video before but I love being creative with media and the skills that I have learnt from AS will help me with the editing.

Album cover Analysis

The title Transition is positioned in the top left and is over him, this highlights the transition that he has made from the dark to the light which is metaphorical for his past.
The white light in the background creeping through the black can denote how there is a positive future for this person
The chain that is showsn is called a “Jesus Peice” which is a religious symbol but is expensive, showing his materialistic state of mind still
The dark background is still seen behind him emphasising its in the past.

Chase and status are affiliated with bright yellow so this is their trademark.
The dog in the background is a british bulldog crossbreed, which explains how this urban british music is going to spread worldwide.
And the greyscale background hints how it is emerging
This album cover is one of the most simple covers I have come across but if you look deeper into the artists music and actually have an udnerstanding of the culture then you can see why they have designed it in this way. I am a fan of chase and status and they make rave music which is dubstep and drum and bass. This music is known as hard, urban, british and grimey.

The E backwards is not just done for style but it is because it is his 3rd major album that he released.
The curtain open is awaiting his exit and is in relation to the title of the album.
The blue shade on the artist puts him in a good light but sparks the feel of death as it seems as if he is losing his colour.
The old crowd that is here makes no sense unless you are a fan of his music. The reason why he was quitting music was because of the father role that he had to take on and this meant that he had to change his music meaning a different audience.

Proposal

I will be using myself, Luke Edwards, Liam Graham, Alex Mavro, Kayvaan Kapadia, Joe fitchet and most likely a couple other people in the background to represent a 'lads holiday.' I am planning to be in a group of 10 and only 4 of us will be in focus in the camera, the others will be walk-ons or act as passers by so they won’t be really shown much. The club that I am hoping to be using is Escape and the owner is Jeff Lim who I will be contacting shortly to ask permission to film in.
I have chosen 2 locations to film in, this is because my first location (the night club) I am awaiting permission to film there and the other location will be in my friends house in Eastcote where the opening scene will take place. Within the club I will be filming on the dance floor where the main movement happens and the bar where you purchase the drinks.
The song I have chosen is ‘The Streets – Blinded by the Lights’ or it will be the remix which has a slight change to it which is called ‘The Streets – Blinded by the Lights Nero remix.’ The reason I have chosen this song is because of the synch in the sound and some of the lyrics. It resembles the party style scene and essentially represents alcohol and showing the lifestyle of a young stereotypical teenager at a party. The song has a deep emotional meaning as well and I think it triggers the depressive drunken emotion which some people can relate to.
The music video will hopefully have been shot before the Christmas time period this year, this gives me a sufficient amount of time to edit and if needed reshoot my video. I have some editing ideas that I would like to play around with so if I get it done as soon as possible I can have time to test these techniques out.

Equipment

TThe digital technology that I will be using will be cameras and other digital equipment which will be supplied by the media department and my camera at home. The quality of the camera's are the same so there will be no difference if I was to use different cameras for a scene. Thanks to the progression in digital technology can we now see what the clip looks like instantly after we recorded where as in the 1980's the camera crew would have to record the scene and judge whether to keep the recording or not. There is also a new experience for the viewer as the visual quality of cameras have improved and now you can purchase a good quality camera much cheaper. This is similar with the sound of the recording as in every aspect of digital technology has improved significantly. I will be using a handheld camera and this will give the effect that the viewer has an insight to the video and will be as if they are experiencing it first hand. Having a hand held camera is another development in technology as cameras used to be big and bulky and this would make me unable to record as having a big camera would be expensive and hard to move around. Another camera which isn't a usual choice for a music video is the Iphone, it is still HD quality and has a high amount of memory which could potentially come in useful for small scenes such as on the plane if bigger cameras are not permitted.

Generic Elements of the Product

The way that the artists are seen is extremely important in a music video. The song can show how the artists are in person and explain the meaning behind the song.
Rap songs for example would usually go with the stereotypical nature of hip hop and would use materialistic items such as lots of money and nice cars and be shown in a wide shot ect to emhpasise the amount of items that they posess.

Front cover

I have an idea which will put my camera skills to the test.
I am planning to use the theme of lights in my picture as the title of the song is "blinded by the lights."
My favourite choice of location to take pictures of lights would have to be central London e.g oxford street.
There is a pathway in-between the roads and I think that if I use a wide shutter time then I can capture the moving lights of the cars well and should give a good effect.
This effect will only be available really at night time so I would have to go there around 8 oclock because it is winter time and should get dark quickly.
I was going to stand in the middle of the road completely still with scruffy smart clothing which would give the impression that I am drunk and i should hold a champaigne bottle in my hand.
The second idea that I have would be to shoot the photo in a hotel abroad. This idea is part of the new story plan that I have in mind. This involves shooting the video in Holland.

Plan B Music Video Analysis

The music video Plan B – Mama is a narrative explaining the relationship that the artist’s mother is having with a man and she is being treated badly. When the husband is in the scenes the lighting is dark and the scene appears to be in greyscale portraying his character as negative.

The song involves a guitar and a drum which would really give off the impression that the song is of an Indie Genre. As the artist starts to rap and the drums turn into a Skippy beat we can quickly identify the hip hop genre and this is parallel to the song as the clothes that the artist wears are typical youth clothing. The beginning of the video suggests that men are more powerful than women, the actual position of the characters explain this as she is cooking and the man is in a vest on the table. The relaxed nature of the man with his back turned can denote how there is no equality in the relationship and explains the negative relationship. Other critics could denote hints of racism within the lyrics as he sings “Its so black and white” which is ironic as the couple are contrasting races which could suggest that these kind of multicultural relationships don’t work due to contrasting views. The quick cuts are metaphorical as they separate the scenes (couple) and emphasise the severity of the situation. These cuts go from the couple, then to the artist (child) and then back to the couple. This has been edited in a way that emphasises how the child is in-between the relationship and is slowly being pushed out as the man treats her badly.

Diary

I have been so excited to choose my music video.
I have written down loads of plans for it but I just need to get the right location and I will be done!
I have learnt alot about the norms of music videos and what are succesful styles.
I have learnt about how music video's all have a concept behind them and can relate to real life situations ect.

Ed Sheeran - The A Team

The colouring of the video A team straight away gives off the essence of class and trendiness, this is in contrast to the actual character in the video as she is in the low end of society. The lyrics also suggest that she is of an upper class as it says "They say shes in the class A team" this lyric has a dual meaning as she is a pretty woman and the city that is shown in is upper class, but she is a prostitute that takes A class drugs which relates to the phrase 'A team.'
Prostitution is the main theme highlighted within the video and the handheld camera recording the girl makes it seem as if the viewer is there which helps the audience understand what their life is like. The still camera watching the girl sell "Big Issue" on the street is shot in fast motion and is metaphorical for the world passing her by as she is still stuck on the street. The fact that the girl is selling "Big Issue" is very important for the audience as people always see these homeless on the street and essentially gives the reader an insight to the life behind the homeless.
There is a shot of her at Angel train station which is ironic as she is a beautiful girl but does sinful things to survive, at the same time she is looking at flowers on the street which are unnatainable. This explains how she is desperate to 'blossom' and be in the light, but her financial status doesnt allow her to do so as she has to resort to prostitution.
From a feminist point of view this video would create a bad image of men as it shows how mens sexual desire drives them to treat women as sexual objects. The artist on the other hand is the positive character and essentially puts him in a positive light as he sits down and comforts the woman. These shots of him talking to the girl and caring about her presents him as a positive person and wuold be seen as a good role model for young men.
Marxist theorists would be able to see this negative lifestyle and relate it to the girls economic state. I personally agree with the response a marxist would have which would be that no matter what somebodies financial status is, they should never have to result to self harm or in any sense or form put themselves at the hand of others.

The Streets - Blinded by the Lights

The music video "The Streets - Blinded by the Lights" starts off with a very common man from the east end getting ready for a party. The text shown to the camera is the establishing shot which shows that he is meant to meet the girl in the corner. 'The corner' straight away symbolises the rebellious nature of the two and essentially sets the mood.
The slow beats of the music are paralel to the slow cut aways which helps emphasise the intensity of the drugs and alcohol he has taken and gradually gets more intoxicated. The POV angle allows the audience to see the slow deterioration of his stability and this abstract view is adjacent to the abstract situation that he is in. These drugs essentially take him away from reality and makes him not care of what is really going on which is perceived as a good thing.
There can be a negative response from Feminist critics as women are perceived to be the antagonist which is paralel to the stereotype of the 1800's view on women as they were seen to be problematic. This form of short term pleasure is apparent in the narrative as women and drugs are seen to be pleasurable but lead to negative things.

Issues Surrounding Representation

The way in which artists are represented can have some bad feedback with the public as it encourages young people to go down the path of crime and label women. This is usually in hip hop and urban music which sometimes is banned from appearing on some tv shows due to the bad lyrics.

Generic Elements of the Product

The way that the artists are seen is extremely important in a music video. The song can show how the artists are in person and explain the meaning behind the song.

Conventions Of The Product

A music video essentially an insight into the lyrics and portrays the artist in a certain way which puts them in a positive light. The majority of Music Video's contain a narrative or storyline which is paralel to the song and exposes the meaning behind the lyrics. The way in which the video is shot also resembles how the artists are shown, for example the camera angles could be POV style ect and can all resemble different things.

Development Of The Medium

Music videos have progressed so much since their kickstart but they were not the type of music video you would automatically think of. In the 1930's the term "Music Video" wasnt used yet and their was cartoons made by walt disney with text at the bottom which was essentially Kareoke. This 'Kareoke' was called 'Screen Songs' and was nowhere near as entertaining as the music videos that we have now. Thanks to technology we have been able to do so many things with video's and new levels can be reached, also ways in which artists can prommote their product have reached new levels as sites such as Youtube and Myspace can spread the video's viral.

Research Stages

The purpose of the product is essentially to sell the song and to entertain the audience. Usually a music video will portray the Artist in a positive way even if the music video is very negative. Music video's came around during the time of Top of the Pops, this was because of some of the artists going on tour and not being able to perform live so they recorded themselves singing and played it on air.
