Digipack Photoshoot NEW

The photoshoot didn't go too well due to the lighting and I would ideally like my front cover of my digipack to have some sort of light coming from somewhere.
My new idea for my video which I have explained in a previous video will also help me find a better location for my photoshoot. I want to highlight the fact of travelling and to resemble the music video and main artist as it is the main song in the album and the only one that has a music video about it. This will help my audience relate to the album as they may have seen the video.
The hotel "Van gough Hotel" has beds in the rooms and I have asked for a picture of the rooms from the hotel. The layout is appaerntly near a window so I have a couple ideas for the front cover. I was thinking of more of a hangover style picture instead of an eccentric picture, this is because I dont want my audience to see the main part in a picture but see the aftermath, making them curious to as what is in the middle.
Most likely I will have a picture of my artist laying on the bed in an uncomftorable position to show he has had a night out, but I will take lots of photos with my digital camera until I get the perfect shot.
Also I will take photos of the ticket to amsterdam and also of maybe famous places for my inside of my cover, preferably urban famous places as I am in the genre of dubstep

Evaluation 4

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
The most important part of my a2 coursework was that I had access to important software such as adobe Photoshop, premier and after effects which I used to create different parts of my coursework.
Research for my music video meant that I would be using websites such as Youtube and MTV to analyse and get inspiration from music videos of a similar genre. These sites contained thousands of videos and I could scan through them picking up new and effective Ideas which would help in my main task. I found clips such as “The Streets – Blinded by the lights” and “Ultrabeat – Pretty green eyes” as they have similar codes and conventions as mine. All of the product research that I did was very important in creating my product so I had to make sure I kept the information safe. I used the website www.blogger.com which is a blogging website and saves information under certain categories making it easy for me to keep track of my work. Videos and production logs can be saved on the website and I can also post diary posts to show how I’ve kept up to date with my work.
For the production task I had to create a photo shoot for my artist where I used a canon 550d camera which was very high quality. As it is a digital camera it means I can save hundreds of photos on a memory card so that I can take many shots until I have the right one. This is the same camera that I used for the shooting of my music video as I got used to the buttons and settings so I found it easy to record with. These digital cameras are being used for music videos for mainstream artists as they are cheap to buy and still produce a high quality. There is not much need for big cameras any more as these cameras are low budget but still produce the high quality that certain music videos desire. Devices like ‘The Red Camera’ cost around £20,000 and they are even being made into smaller and more portable devices which are used by Hollywood film crews. The smaller the camera ,the harder the handling so I used a stabiliser with my Canon for the start and end of my video to keep the camera sturdy.

I used Adobe premiere to cut my music video and add small effects. The cutting of my video was extremely important as I wanted to comply to Andrew Goodwin’s theory of the song and the visuals relating. Adobe premier allowed me to cut my video in time with the beat and choose what transition I thought would be suitable for each clip.
When creating my digipack I used the digital camera and adobe photoshop. I took many photos on the camera which were saved on the memory card then transferred them onto a laptop where I then opened the photo on photoshop. I could cut out the background thanks to me taking the pictures on a blank canvas. This made it easy for me to see the difference between my artist and the background. I then used editing tools such as color layers, motion blur and text layers to create my digipack in the style that I wanted. I look at tutorials online to teach me how to darken and brighten certain specific parts of my photo and it worked well.

Evaluation 3

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?
For my audience feedback I already had in mind to ask mainly boys from the age of 14-24 as this was my target audience. I still wanted to appeal to girl dubstep fans so I got their opinion on my final product aswell. This was an extremely important part of the development process as my audience’s opinion can help me understand the positives and negatives of my video. All of the characters in my video were 18 years of age and were all male; I chose this as I wanted to appeal to ‘YAKS’ which is short for ‘Young Adventurous Keen and Singe’. This would be targeting audience C2 which are young aspiring people from the ages of 17-24. My target audience wanted to be entertained visually meaning that I had to keep changing my scenery and speeding up and slowing down the footage.
I used social networking sites such as Blogger/Face book and twitter to showcase my video and see who liked it. The like option on facebook shows if people like the video and this showed me out of the number of people that saw the video who liked it. Also it gave the option to comment aswell which helped and I received a lot of positive feedback on the video. Twitter has the option to retweet and by counting the number of retweets can you tell how popular the video is and what people retweet it. This gave me a summary of what type of people like my product and the comments that come along with it can help me change it to make it better.
I set up a poll on my blog which I got people who were in my audience category to answer, I asked questions such as “What style of music video do you prefer” and gave them options to answer with. These questions helped a lot as they gave my audience various options for an answer. I gathered all of this information and applied it to my video. One of the main things that I took note of was the style of my video. The main poll answer was “energetic and fun.” This meant that people who like dubstep prefer energetic and fun videos to depressed and slow videos, this then made me plan out a club style of scene as it fits right into that description.
The feedback was extremely helpful but what some people didn’t comment on was the start of my video. I wanted this to be a bit different and it gives an insight to the narrative as it is the establishing shot. Due to the lack of commentary on it I changed the start to a more shot reverse shot style of conversation so that it is more visually entertaining and hopefully people would appreciate it more and further help them understand the characters situation.

Evaluation 2

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary tasks?
Each product in my digipack has its individual purpose. The music video showcases the lyrics and represents the genre through various different shots and editing techniques. I used certain shots such as POV shots and close ups to make my audience feel as if they were there, this also accompanied my objective of giving my character a similar status to my audience. Like other dubstep music videos my character is very natural and is does not act of a high status. This is important because I wanted my audience to relate to the characters instead of look up to them and idolise them. The album cover is important in showcasing my narrative and theme. My album cover had to be done in a way that supported my music videos narrative and represented one or all of the scenes. It has specific elements such as the list of songs at the back of the digipack and the attractive front cover which should grab the audience’s attention. My album cover highlights the information on the release and promotes the artist. Its aim is to attract the audience’s attention to the product and simultaneously giving them important information on where and when to purchase the product. The release date, picture of the artist and website are just a few key elements which helped promote my artist and all had to work together to grab there attention. My main theme for all of my texts was urban and youthful. I used text, images, backgrounds and mis en scene of the artist himself to create a brand identity that my audience can relate to. The text in all of my pieces were in a custom font and was in the style of a digital clock. This ‘time’ font is used in my music video and all of my ancillary tasks, I felt this was very important as I wanted to create fluidity and helped my audience easily identify my product. To support my theme of urban and youth culture I filmed a lot of the scenes outside instead of just in the club, this gave my video a street kind of feel to it and helped support the urban theme. Excited faces and laughing also gave my audience that sense of youthfulness especially when the club scene comes into play. But all of these ideas were from my point of view so I had to get some feedback from my target audience.

Evaluation 1

1In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Within the construction and planning process of my coursework I made sure that I kept in mind some of the key codes and conventions of a media product which helped me create visuals that would be both entertaining and professional. I created 3 pieces of coursework which were a Magazine, a music video and a digipack and to keep track of my progress it was suggested that I made a blog as I can easily update it to show my progress and keep my files in a safe place.
Within my music video I had to stick with certain codes and conventions which would help my music video be easily identified and target the right audience. The use of Mis en scene, Camera angles, Editing, Representation and Narrative all work together to create music videos that we see every day and put them into their genres. Music videos usually represent styles in various ways depending on its genre. The genre dubstep usually contains diversion themes to it, which tends to start off with a primary subject and ends up changing dramatically when the ‘drop’ in the song is. This ‘drop’ is when people in the club tend to start to dance and this is parallel with the music video as people want to see a physical change in the song as well as hear it. Blinded By The Lights is an eclectic and tensional brew cooked from urban trance loops, slow drum beats and fragile backing vocals. This song itself has no conventions as she sings one line over a trancey beat which is unusual but worked. The video is however is urban and is based around young people which could sprout the idea that it is more of a dubstep song rather than a Pop soundtrack. There is no real high or low profile character in this genre; the characters are usually a representation of the audience which is ‘YAKS’ which is essentially young party goers. My performers in my video are very naturalistic which helps my audience relate to their mood before and after the party.
I followed the codes and conventions of similar music videos such as “The Streets – Blinded by the lights (Original soundtrack)” and “The streets – Dry your eyes mate.” These songs both had a similar feel to mine and were mainly based around relationships. Slow motion shots were used very frequently in “Blinded by the Lights” and this was used to really highlight their characters emotion as seeing things in slow motion makes the audience notice the smaller things. There is also two opposing moods to the music video which are “party happy” and “depressed.” The main characters similarly have facial expressions which are at times dull and depressed then later on in the song denote happiness through partying. The relationship between the characters sets the theme of video as the main character is seen hugging and drinking with his friends representing a ‘lads night out.’ My actors actions had to be very naturalistic as I didn’t want my characters to seem superior to my audience at any time. My intentions were to relate to the audience so I re-created movement which is typical of friends to have such as hugging and lots of conversation.
As music and visuals are important conventions in music videos according to Goodwin’s theory I edited my video and added certain effects to highlight the importance of the timing. As I wanted my video to be upbeat but still have a shallow mood to it I cut the clips in time with the beat keeping the visuals and the song very closely linked. I did this to emphasise the upbeat tempo and to help signify that my music video is in the dubstep genre. The genre dubstep is significant for its signature ‘drop’ in the song. The ‘drop’ is known by listeners of the genre to be the point where everybody dances and creates a hedonistic mood. To emphasise the relationship between the dubstep visuals and the dubstep song I used the build up to the drop by letting one clip flow and put it in 200% speed to give it a kind of build up effect. Then when the song dropped I completely slowed the clip down which was on my main character celebrating. This actually went against the normal conventions of dubstep videos as usually there are lots of small clips used in build up to the drop, instead I did the opposite but used it to create the same effect.

Audience feedback

I sent my video to a few people that are suitable for my target audience. They are all party goers and some are familiar with the genre dubstep.
Here is what a few of them said

Narrative

My music video starts off with a scene in the main character’ (Keith) household. He receives a text from his girlfriend where she informs him that she isn’t happy and wants to take a break. Keith tells his dad he's going out and then the music starts. He puts on his coat and goes to the airport in a cab, as he waits for the bus various camera angles surround him and act as if it prolongs time. He gets on the plane and starts to feel happier as he's now with his friends and his girlfriend is off his mind. He changes position on the plane quite a lot and it seems as if everything around him is passing by and his life is not really meaningful. As he starts to grow sadder he gets off the plane and suddenly the song drops which changes his mood into some kind of celebration. He starts his journey to the hotel where he puts down his bags and then the screen goes black with a time caption and skips straight to the club. The club scene involves panning and a close up of the main characters face along with various mid shots of people dancing. The song is called “Blinded by the lights” which means I have to get lots of the lighting in the video aswell as It’s the climax of the song. The song then cuts back to the hotel where all of the characters are feeling the morning after and can clearly see the hangover taking its full effect.

New Location Reccee

The Night Club ESCAPE was not happy with me filming with my Canon Camera but allowed the use of mobile devices to record such as the iphone.

New Location recce

There is a good oppurtunity to film in Holland as I have posted on a previous Diary entry.
I have looked at certain locations to film and have highlighted certain ones.

Liam's House: Used for the starting scene where close up of phone is seen.
Taxi: On the way to the airport.
Gatwick Airport: I have contacted reception and they said I can film as long as long as it is not profitable.
On the plane: Electronic equipment must be turned off when told to do so.
Amsterdam Airport: Just to show arrival briefly
Van gough Hotel: Permission to film in room but not in stairway or reception
Escape Night Club: Yet to ask

Here is a video of Escape Night club, It looks like the perfect location to shoot my final scene as the lighting looks pretty good.

An improvement to my music video?

After reconsidering my storyboard I chose to take advantage of the fact that I am going to Holland. After researching the area that i will be residing in I realised that this would be a much more appropriate location for my video shoot than my original idea. I am therefore going to take the same video concept but incorporated it into a bigger and better location!
Instead of having my video shot on the bus and end up in a house party, I will be shooting my video on the airplane and ending up in a famous night club!

Diary

It has taken us a while to get to the airport and I am using my mobile to update my progression on the filming as I won't be able to be near a computer for the journey.
I am going to take a few shots of me entering the airport and going up the escalators, a lot of these shots will be shot by my camera men and will be of my main character, although we will be holding lots of luggage I think they can still do a very good job.
It is quite cold at this moment in time but I think we can use this to our advantage as the snow can really bring things like roads and pavement to life as it isnt something we see everyday here in England.

Diary

I arrived at my first location where we will film the opening scene.
Even though I planned to have an hour slot to film the first scene I had to take up 30 minutes of my time teaching one of my cameramen what shots are what and how to hold the camera. This was quite important as no matter how good the camera is it can still look unproffesional if the camera is shakey.

Digipack photoshoot

Due to me changing the front of my cover I decided to also change the back of my digipack as they would not add up.
I am thinking of using easyjet ticket on the back in the dark to give it that urban feel and have the text on the left.
I want to keep the smoke/drink essense in the pack so I might use a ciggarette in it aswell or maybe a beer can to try to highlight that party/hangover theme to it.

Digipack Old Draft

My plan is to have me stand in the left while there is a blank canvas next/behind him so I can write the title behind.

Test Shot

Here is one of the pictures that I took for the front cover of the digipack.
I wanted to test to see how the camera would look in daylight and am going to take another shot at nightime soon. I will play around with the editing and see what looks best.

My new front cover may be taken at an airport at night now or in a hotel with
